Why your website isn't generating leads, and how to fix it

If your website is up, looks reasonable, but the phone still isn't ringing, it's almost always one of a small set of problems. Here are the eight we see most often in UK trades businesses, with a clear fix for each one.

A website doesn't generate enquiries by accident. Three things have to line up: the right people find it, they understand what you do within a few seconds, and they have an obvious next step to take. If any of those is broken, leads dry up.

1. You're invisible on Google for local searches

If you don't show up when someone in your town searches for your trade, you're not getting most of the enquiries available to you. This is by far the most common cause.

  • Your Google Business Profile isn't fully filled out or hasn't been updated in months.
  • You don't have dedicated pages for each service / town combination.
  • Your site has no clear structure, Google can't tell what you do or where.
  • You have very few or no recent Google reviews.

2. Visitors can't tell what you do in the first 5 seconds

Most visitors decide whether to keep reading within a few seconds. If your homepage opens with a vague slogan and no clear list of services or service areas, they leave.

  • Headline should name your trade and your main area ('Roofing in Newcastle & Gateshead').
  • Phone number visible top-right on every page.
  • A simple list of your top services with one-click access to each.

3. Your site is slow on mobile

Trades enquiries are overwhelmingly mobile. If your homepage takes more than 3 seconds to load on a 4G connection, you're losing roughly half your visitors before they even see your offer.

4. There aren't enough trust signals

  • No real Google reviews on the page.
  • Stock photos instead of pictures of your team and your work.
  • No mention of Gas Safe, NICEIC, FENSA, TrustMark or other relevant accreditations.
  • No 'About us' content explaining who actually runs the business.

5. Calls to action are weak or hidden

Every page should make the next step obvious. For trades, that's usually 'Call now' or 'Get a free quote'. Buttons should be visible on mobile without scrolling.

6. Your forms ask too much (or too little)

  • Asking for 8+ fields kills conversion, keep it to name, phone and a short message.
  • Asking for nothing useful means you have to spend 10 minutes qualifying every enquiry.
  • Form-only contact, with no phone number, costs you the customers who prefer to talk.

7. You're not following up fast enough

Half of enquiries go to whoever replies first. If new leads sit for hours, most are already booked in with someone else by the time you get back to them.

8. You have no idea where your traffic comes from

Without basic analytics, you can't tell whether your problem is traffic, conversion or follow-up, so it's impossible to fix the right thing. Every site should track sessions, sources and form submissions at a minimum.

If your Google Business Profile is set up correctly, you can see enquiries within days of launching. Organic search traffic from local SEO usually starts building from month 2 and compounds steadily from month 3 onwards.

How do I know if my website is too slow?+

Run a free test on PageSpeed Insights. Anything above 3 seconds on mobile is costing you enquiries, around half of visitors abandon a page that takes longer than that to load.

Do I need a blog to get leads?+

No. For most trades businesses, well-written service and area pages outperform a blog. Blogs help if you have time to write regularly, but they're not a requirement to rank locally.

Will more pages mean more enquiries?+

Only if those pages target real searches. A focused 8-page site that covers your top 3 services across 5 towns will usually beat a 40-page site full of generic filler.
